Outlook: How to Use the “Do Not Forward” Feature
Before You Begin:
- You need access to Outlook or Office 365.
- Make sure you are signed in with your UofL email account.
Objective or Task:
Mark an email as “Do Not Forward” to restrict recipients from forwarding, printing or copying its content.
Instructions:
- Create a new email message in Outlook.
- Select the Options tab at the top of the message window.

- In the Options bar click the downward-facing arrow under Encrypt.

- If prompted select the appropriate mailbox from the dropdown menu.

- In the menu that appears select Do Not Forward.

How to Tell an Email is Marked “Do Not Forward”:
- When previewing the message a notice will state that the sender has sent a protected message.
- When reading the message you will see a banner at the top:
“Do Not Forward – Recipients can read this message, but cannot forward, print or copy content. The conversation starter has full permission to their message and all replies.”
Outcome:
After completing these steps your email will be protected. Recipients will not be able to forward, print, or copy the message content, helping to keep sensitive information secure.
