Report a Phishing Email: How to Notify UofL ITS

Before You Begin

Ensure you have a valid UofL user account and login credentials.
Familiarize yourself with common phishing tactics and warning signs.
Do not click links or download attachments from suspicious emails.

Objective or Task

Learn how to report a suspected phishing email to ITS's security team for investigation and response.

Instructions

Identify a Phishing Email

  • Look for suspicious sender addresses, urgent requests, misspellings and unexpected attachments or links.
  • Hover over links to check their destination before clicking.
  • Be wary of emails asking for personal information, passwords or financial details.

Report the Phishing Email

  • If using Outlook, click the “Report Phishing” button.
  • Include any details about how you received the email or why you believe it is suspicious.

Additional Steps

  • Do not respond to the phishing email or provide any information.
  • Using the "Report" button will remove the email from your inbox. If not, place the email in the spam folder.
  • If you clicked a link or entered information, contact ITS immediately for further guidance.

Outcome

After completing these steps, your report will help ITS investigate and block phishing threats, protecting UofL’s data and systems.
