Before You Begin
Ensure you have a valid UofL user account and login credentials.
Review UofL's Information Security Policies and Procedures for malware prevention requirements.
Install ITS-approved antivirus and endpoint protection software on all university devices. Contact your desktop support personnel or the ITS HelpDesk if you are not familiar with this software.

Learn how to prevent, detect and respond to malware threats for secure computing at UofL.
Instructions
Prevent Malware Infections
- Keep your operating system and all software up to date with the latest security patches.
- Install and regularly update ITS-approved antivirus software (e.g., Microsoft Defender).
- Do not download or run unknown files, attachments or links from suspicious emails or websites.
- Avoid using personal devices for university business unless they meet security standards.
Detect and Report Malware
- Monitor your device for unusual behavior (slow performance, pop-ups, unauthorized changes).
- Run regular antivirus scans and review security alerts.
- If you suspect malware infection, disconnect from the network and contact ITS immediately.
Respond to Malware Incidents
- Report suspected malware incidents to secureit@louisville.edu or the ITS HelpDesk.
- Follow ITS guidance for containment, removal, and recovery.
- Do not attempt to remove malware yourself if you are unsure; professional remediation may be required.
Follow University Policies
- Do not use university systems for cybersecurity research involving malware.
- Account sharing and use of malicious software are strictly prohibited.
- Violations may result in account suspension and further investigation.
Outcome
After completing these steps, you will be able to prevent, detect and respond to malware threats, helping protect UofL’s data and systems.
