Identify your database needs (e.g., research, reporting, application development).

Learn how to request, manage and use databases and related tools at UofL.
Instructions
Request Database Services
- Submit a ticket via the ITS Service Catalog or contact the ITS HelpDesk for database setup or support.
- Specify your requirements: type of database (SQL, MySQL), storage needs, access permissions and integration with other tools (e.g., Power BI).
Design and Set Up Your Database
- Work with ITS or your department’s IT coordinator to design your database schema.
- Normalize data to reduce redundancy and define relationships using primary and foreign keys.
Secure and Manage Your Database
- Set up user roles and permissions to control access.
- Encrypt sensitive data and regularly update database software to patch vulnerabilities.
- Schedule regular backups and test recovery procedures.
Use SQL and Business Intelligence Tools
- Use SQL commands (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE) for data manipulation.
- Connect your database to Power BI for advanced analytics and reporting.
- Follow guides for integrating MySQL with Power BI for real-time data visualization.
Monitor and Optimize Performance
- Use Power BI and other monitoring tools to track database performance.
- Optimize queries and indexes to improve speed and efficiency.
Stay Compliant and Updated
- Follow UofL data security policies and best practices.
- Participate in training or consult ITS for updates on database management and new features.
