Yubikey: How to Set Up and Use Yubikey at UofL

Before You Begin

Ensure you have a valid UofL user account and login credentials.
Confirm your account is eligible for Yubikey setup (faculty, staff, or student with access to secure systems).
Have your Yubikey device ready.

Learn how to set up, register and use Yubikey for secure authentication at UofL.

Instructions

Register and Set Up Your Yubikey

  1. Insert your Yubikey into the USB port of your computer or tap it against the NFC reader on your mobile device (if applicable).
  2. Log in to the UofL account or service you wish to secure (e.g., ULink, Office365, WorkdayHR).
  3. Navigate to the security settings or two-factor authentication section.
  4. Select Add Security Key or Register Yubikey.
  5. Follow on-screen instructions. When prompted, touch or tap the button on your Yubikey.
  6. Confirm registration and test login with your Yubikey.

Using Yubikey for Login

  • When logging in to a protected UofL system, enter your username and password.
  • Insert or tap your Yubikey when prompted.
  • Authenticate by touching the Yubikey button.

Best Practices

  • Register a backup Yubikey to avoid being locked out if your primary key is lost or damaged.
  • Store your Yubikey securely when not in use.
  • Update your account recovery options in case you lose access to your Yubikey.

Troubleshooting

  • If your Yubikey is not recognized, try a different USB port or device.
  • Ensure your operating system and browser are up to date.
  • For touch sensor issues, apply more pressure or use lotion if your skin is dry.
  • If problems persist, contact ITS HelpDesk for support.
