UofL WiFi Networks (Overview and Instructions)

Overview

Our University of Louisville wireless network provides four different connections on all campuses with 802.11n dual band 2.4/5GHz WiFi. We recommend using our ITS on-boarding tool to assist with the set-up of your devices for the best connectivity and with extended certified access (up to 5 years).

The four primary types of wireless access are available, depending upon your needs and UofL sign-in options, are Eduroam, ULsecure, ULsponsor, and ULvisitor.

For those living in the residence halls, UofL has partnered with Apogee to provide residential network (ResNet) access.

Eduroam  

Eduroam allows UofL students, faculty, and staff to easily obtain WiFi internet connectivity across campus. Eduroam also provides wi-fi access for campus visitors from participating institutions without the need to obtain UofL guest credentials. Eduroam is the preferred UofL wireless network for students, faculty and staff based on the most secure encryption and authentication standards available.

ULvisitor

ULvisitor allows for open, short-term use. With no sign-in required, this connection is primarily for UofL’s visitors and guests who need wireless access.  WiFi sessions on ULvisitor are limited to 6 hours on HTTP and HTTPS sites and sessions automatically log out after 30 minutes of inactivity.

ULsponsor

ULsponsor is our wireless network that allows unlimited but unencrypted access for frequent or short-term guests to UofL. Sponsorship by a UofL faculty or administrative staff is required for this type of WiFi account.  Authentication can be achieved via local password-based authentication or by registering the device's MAC address. 

ULsecure

ULsecure is another UofL secure wireless network for students, faculty and staff which encrypts data in order to prevent intrusions and interception of traffic. This WiFi connection also requires a valid UofL userID and password.

ResNet

UofL has partnered with Apogee to provide residential network (ResNet) services for the residence halls.  Students can sign up for Internet service, or upgrade their service plan, via Apogee's myResNet student portal. Instructions

Eduroam (preferred)

  1. Open a web browser on your device and go to the UofL SecureW2 onboarding tool.
  2. Select your operating system and follow the prompts to install the security certificate.
  3. Enter your UofL credentials when prompted.
  4. Once installed, you will connect to eduroam automatically and will not need to re-enter your password when it changes.
  5. When the certificate expires, follow renewal instructions sent via email.

ULvisitor

  1. On your device, select ulvisitor from the list of available wireless networks.
  2. Open a web browser and go to any website. You will be redirected to the ulvisitor access page (on some mobile devices, this page opens automatically).
    • If your browser home page is set to a secure (https://) site, you may not be redirected to the login page. Change your home page to a non-secure site or visit http://neverssl.com to trigger the login page.
  3. Click Accept to acknowledge the terms of use.
  4. After accepting, you will see a confirmation page and can begin using the Internet (HTTP and HTTPS only).

ULsponsor

  1. Obtain a sponsored guest account from your UofL sponsor (faculty or administrative staff).
  2. The sponsored guest account can be setup to use a temporary username/password or we can authenticate by the device's MAC address.
  3. On your device, select ulsponsor from the list of available wireless networks.
  4. For username/password based authentication, open a web browser and go to any website. You will be redirected to the UofL guest login page.
  5. If your browser home page is set to a secure (https://) site, you may not be redirected to the login page. Change your home page to a non-secure site or visit http://neverssl.com to trigger the login page.
  6. Log in with your sponsored guest username and password.
  7. After logging in, you can use Internet services and web browsing as you would at a public venue.
  8. Users can also register the device's wireless MAC address and connect without needing username/password (this is good for devices that don’t support enterprise authentication).
    1. How to find device wireless MAC address  (hyperlink)
      1. Note: iOS/android use “private MAC address” you will need to disable this if registering one of these devices by its MAC address for ulsponsor.  See below for instructions on how to disable private MAC). This is necessary because the MAC address that is presented to us when using private MAC addresses won't match the actual device MAC - and thus cause authentication to fail. Users needing help with MAC address authentication can open a ticket with our ITS HelpDesk.
    2. To Disable MAC Randomization on iOS Devices: 
      1. Open the Settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, then tap Wi-Fi or WLAN 
      2. Tap the information button next to your network 
      3. Turn off Private Address 
      4. Re-join the network
    3. To Disable MAC Randomization on Android Devices: 
      1. Open the Settings 
      2. Tap Network & Internet -> Wi-Fi 
      3. Tap the gear icon associated with your network 
      4. Tap MAC address type 
      5. Tap Phone MAC 
      6. Re-join the network 

​​​​​​​ULsecure

  1. On your device, select ulsecure from the list of available wireless networks.
  2. Log in with your university login credentials.

ResNet

  1. On your device, select the appropriate Wi-Fi network:
    • For 5GHz devices, choose MyResNet.
    • For 2.4GHz devices, choose MyResNet Legacy.
  2. Open a web browser. You will be redirected to the MyResNet splash page.
  3. Click Click here to continue on the splash page.
  4. At the bottom of the page, find and copy your device’s MAC address. Save this for later.
  5. Click Create an account.
  6. Fill in all required fields with your personal information.
  7. Select Add devices.
  8. Enter your device’s MAC address and select your device from the list.
  9. Restart your device to complete the connection.
  10. Repeat steps 7–9 for each additional device you want to connect.
