Security Incident Response: How to Respond to Security Incidents at UofL

Summary

Security incident response is the process of identifying, containing and remediating adverse or malicious events affecting UofL systems, data or networks. The ITS Enterprise Security team coordinates incident response to protect university resources and minimize impact.

Before You Begin

Ensure you have a valid UofL user account and login credentials.
Review UofL Information Security policies and procedures for incident response requirements.
Know how to recognize signs of a security incident (e.g., unauthorized access, data exposure, system unavailability).

Objective or Task

Learn how to report, respond to and contain security incidents in compliance with university policies.

Instructions

Identify a Security Incident

  • Look for signs such as unauthorized access, suspicious activity, data loss or system outages.
  • Review the definition of a security incident in university policy.

Report the Incident

  • Immediately report suspected incidents to secureit@louisville.edu or the ITS HelpDesk.
  • For data privacy or breach incidents, contact isopol@louisville.edu.
  • Provide details including affected systems, type of incident, and any actions taken.

Contain and Mitigate

  • Follow ITS guidance to contain the incident (e.g., disconnect affected devices, change passwords).
  • Do not attempt to remediate or investigate on your own unless instructed.

Document and Cooperate

  • Document all actions taken and communications related to the incident.
  • Cooperate with ITS and the Information Security Office during the response process.

Outcome

After completing these steps, you will help ensure timely and effective response to security incidents, minimizing risk to UofL data and systems.
