Overview
ListServs are email lists that can be created to email groups of people associated with the university. Listservs are a great way to send important emails to a group of people, notify a specific group of people of an event, share important information and more.
There are three types of listservs:
- Interactive – all subscribers of the listserv can send emails to the listserv, and all subscribers can respond to emails sent to the listserv
- Moderated – all emails sent to the listserv must be approved by the editor of the listserv before they are sent to listserv subscribers
- Announcement/Broadcast – only the editor of the listserv can send messages. Subscribers cannot reply to listserv emails
How to Request a Listserv
Use "Request a Service" to request a listserv. For lists with only university email addresses, consider using a Microsoft 365 group for more collaboration features.
How to Add Subscribers to a Listserv
Before You Begin
- Add new subscribers to your University of Louisville Listserv using the Listserv Management Console.
- Only the list owner can add subscribers.
- For lists with only university email addresses, consider using a Microsoft 365 group for more collaboration features.
Objective or Task
Add subscribers to your Listserv using the Listserv Management Console.
Instructions
- Go to the Listserv Management Console at https://listserv.louisville.edu.
- Click Log In in the top right corner.
- Log in using your UserID@louisville.edu email address and password.
- Click Subscriber Management on the left side of the screen.
- If needed, search for and select the Listserv you want to manage at the top of the screen.
- In the Email Address and Name box, enter the email address and name of the person you want to add.
- For university users, add their UserID@louisville.edu address and their nickname (for example, first.last@louisville.edu).
- For non-UofL users, add their primary email address.
- Select whether you want the new subscriber to receive a notification that they have been added.
- Click Add Subscriber.
Outcome
The new subscriber will be added to your Listserv. If you chose to send a notification, they will receive an email confirming their subscription.
How to Remove Subscribers from a Listserv
Before You Begin
- Remove subscribers from your university listserv using the listserv Management Console.
- Only the list owner can remove subscribers.
- For ownership changes, contact the ITS HelpDesk.

Remove subscribers from your listserv using the Listserv Management Console.
Instructions
- Go to the Listserv Management Console at https://listserv.louisville.edu.
- Click Log In in the top right corner.
- Log in using your UserID@louisville.edu email address and password.
- Click Subscriber Management on the left side of the screen.
- If needed, search for and select the Listserv you want to manage at the top of the screen.
- Search for the subscriber you want to remove by email address or name.
- Select whether you want the user to receive a notification that they have been removed.
- Click Delete to remove the subscriber from your Listserv.
- Do not change any other settings on this page.
- Only use Delete From All Lists if you want to remove the user from every Listserv.
Outcome
The selected subscriber will be removed from your Listserv. If you chose to send a notification, they will receive an email confirming their removal.
